Agartala, November 1: The NDA will contest the upcoming urban local body elections in Tripura jointly, with the BJP and its alliance partner Tipra Motha agreeing to fight the polls together, Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Sunday. He said the final decision on seat-sharing would be taken by Monday night after consultations within the BJP leadership.

The announcement came after a meeting between BJP and Tipra Motha representatives to discuss the alliance’s electoral strategy for the upcoming elections to the Agartala Municipal Corporation, municipal councils and nagar panchayats.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Nath said the primary objective was to ensure that all NDA alliance partners contest the urban local body elections together. He said Tipra Motha had earlier expressed its willingness to participate in the civic polls under the NDA banner, following the alliance’s joint contest in the recent ADC Village Committee elections.

Nath said the understanding followed Tipra Motha’s earlier proposal to contest the civic elections jointly, similar to the arrangement adopted by NDA partners during the ADC Village Committee elections. The BJP leadership subsequently agreed to hold discussions with the regional party on its proposals.

The development is politically significant as Tipra Motha had expressed reservations about entering an electoral arrangement with the BJP over pending commitments under the tripartite agreement. The party had also indicated its intention to contest the urban local body elections independently if no acceptable understanding was reached. Sunday’s announcement signals a shift towards electoral coordination between the two alliance partners.

Nath said the proposals submitted by Tipra Motha would now be examined by the BJP leadership before the final seat-sharing arrangement is announced. He described the meeting as positive and said both sides had agreed on the broader objective of contesting the elections together.

The meeting was attended by Nath and BJP leader Bipin Debbarma, while Tipra Motha was represented by Bishwabandhu Debbarma, Ranjit Debbarma, Purna Chandra Jamatia and Prashanta Sinha.

Tripura’s upcoming civic elections are scheduled for November 27 and will cover 21 urban local bodies across the state, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation.

Editorial note: The strongest angle is the political agreement between the BJP and Tipra Motha after recent uncertainty over their electoral understanding. The joint-contest decision is confirmed by Nath, but the seat-sharing formula remains pending. Avoid suggesting that the seat distribution has already been finalised.
