Sonamura, October 27: Speculation over candidate selection has intensified in Sonamura and Melaghar as the two civic bodies prepare for their upcoming elections, with attention focused on the BJP’s nominee list, the prospects of sitting representatives and the possibility of independent candidates entering the contest.
The State Election Commission is expected to announce the election schedule for Sonamura Nagar Panchayat and Melaghar Municipal Council later this week. Both civic bodies have 13 wards each.
In Sonamura, seven wards have been reserved for male candidates, including two for Scheduled Caste men, while six wards have been reserved for women, including one for a Scheduled Caste woman. In Melaghar, five wards have been reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates—three for men and two for women.
The BJP’s selection process is expected to be a major talking point, particularly in Melaghar, where questions have emerged over the performance of sitting representatives, internal factionalism and alleged misuse of power. Whether the party retains its existing councillors or introduces new faces will be closely watched. The fate of women representatives who have reportedly voiced dissent within the party has also drawn attention.
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) and Congress are expected to field candidates in both civic bodies. An understanding between the two opposition parties over seat-sharing cannot be ruled out.
Independent candidates may also influence the electoral contest, particularly in Melaghar, while some wards in Sonamura could witness similar challenges to party nominees.
With the election schedule yet to be announced, the political landscape remains fluid. Candidate selection, opposition coordination and possible rebel contests are likely to shape the electoral battle in both civic bodies.
