Agartala, Oct 27 2026: The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has come under heavy criticism following allegations of unauthorized road closure along the Bishalgarh-Agartala National Highway on Tuesday. The daytime construction work triggered massive traffic jams and left emergency services, including an ambulance, stranded for hours.

According to local residents, construction work commenced early in the morning without prior public notification or adequate traffic management, leaving vehicles queued up for kilometers on both sides of the highway.

Commuters experienced severe delays, with the prolonged blockage severely disrupting routine movement and posing serious risks to critical patients stuck in traffic.

The incident has sparked widespread public outrage, with residents questioning the administration's decision to permit major construction work during peak daytime hours on one of the state's busiest arterial routes. Locals pointed out that such heavy work should have been scheduled during night hours to prevent massive public inconvenience.

Furthermore, residents questioned whether NHIDCL had obtained the mandatory administrative approvals and clearance from local authorities before blocking the highway. They have demanded a formal inquiry and strict action against those responsible for the disruption.

The event has once again highlighted growing concerns over poor traffic management and lack of coordination during ongoing highway development projects in the state.
