Agartala, Nov 6: Tripura Pradesh Congress on Thursday filed nomination papers in 50 of the 51 wards of the Agartala Municipal Corporation ahead of the upcoming civic elections.
State Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha said nomination papers could not be submitted in one ward due to documentation issues and would be filed on Friday.
Speaking to reporters, Saha accused the ruling party of failing to ensure planned urban development despite spending crores of rupees under the Smart City project. He alleged large-scale irregularities in fund utilisation and said poor planning had left residents struggling with waterlogging, inadequate drinking water and poor civic amenities.
He also criticised the administration over rising property and water taxes, a lack of jobs and the alleged eviction of small traders from their businesses. Saha said the Congress would seek public support by promising planned urban development, better civic services and employment.
Expressing concern over the poll environment, he alleged that opposition candidates faced threats and physical attacks in several municipal areas, including Santirbazar, Mohanpur, Jirania, Ranirbazar and Kamalpur. He accused the administration of failing to ensure a neutral environment and urged the State Election Commission and police to ensure free and peaceful polling.
Saha said the party would assess the situation after the completion of the nomination process on November 6.
