According to the notification, the Governor of Meghalaya is satisfied that circumstances exist rendering the holding of the election impracticable. The decision was taken under the powers conferred by the Constitution of India and The Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules, 1951 as amended.

The extension will enable the conduct of election to the Garo Hills Autonomous District within the six-month period. Copies of the notification were forwarded to various officials including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Ministers, Chief Secretary, and authorities in Tura.

This is according to a notification issued by the District Council Affairs Department of the Government of Meghalaya on October 14, 2026, in Shillong.
