Agartala, October 29: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has accused Tripura Police of failing to take effective action against social media accounts allegedly circulating obscene posts targeting several opposition leaders, despite FIRs being registered at multiple police stations.
A DYFI delegation led by state president Palash Bhowmick met the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) on Wednesday to raise the issue and seek prompt legal action against those responsible.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Bhowmick said obscene posts targeting Leader of the Opposition and former MP Jitendra Chaudhury, former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, former minister Manik Dey, DYFI state secretary Nabarun Deb and other prominent personalities had been circulating on social media.
He alleged that photographs of a woman were being used to target and harass the leaders through a planned campaign on social media, damaging their reputation and public image.
Bhowmick said several citizens had already lodged FIRs at different police stations over the matter. However, he alleged that the police had failed to take adequate legal action against the identified accounts, despite the complaints.
“While the police act promptly in some cases, their response in others remains weak, even after FIRs have been registered,” he said, calling for action against those responsible.
According to Bhowmick, the Cyber Crime authorities assured the delegation that necessary steps would be taken against those involved in circulating the posts at the earliest.
He also called on all political parties to remain alert to such practices and ensure that political differences did not lead to personal attacks or adversely affect the social environment.
The delegation included DYFI state secretary Nabarun Deb and state leaders Arindam Biswas, Asim Sarkar and Prasenjit Deb, along with Bhowmick.
