Agartala, Nov 3: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday announced its candidates for 45 out of 51 wards of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and released the candidate list for 345 seats across other urban local bodies in the state. Addressing a press conference at the state party headquarters in Krishnanagar, Agartala, on Tuesday night, Tripura Pradesh BJP president Abhishek Debroy stated that incumbent Agartala Mayor and Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Dipak Majumder will not contest the upcoming civic polls following an all-India party directive. Debroy told reporters that the central leadership of the BJP has decided that sitting MLAs will no longer be fielded for the posts of Mayor or Chairperson in Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, or Nagar Panchayats, as they have significant organisational and legislative responsibilities. He stated that the same policy will be followed in the upcoming urban local body elections in West Bengal in December. "Dipak Majumder has served the people of Agartala with great efficiency over the past five years and has carried out extensive development work. Although he is not contesting in adherence to the party's national policy, the election campaign in Agartala will be fought under his leadership, keeping his work at the forefront alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Manik Saha, and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb," Debroy remarked. When asked about the party's mayoral face for the AMC, the state BJP chief said the party does not project a candidate before the polls and the decision will be taken by the party leadership after the election results. Out of the 51 wards in the AMC, the party released names for 45 wards on Tuesday, leaving six wards—Ward numbers 12, 19, 22, 35, 41, and 45—to be announced on Wednesday. Speaking on seat-sharing with ruling ally Tipra Motha Party, Debroy said that three seats have been allotted to Tipra Motha overall in the civic polls, adding that specific details regarding Agartala will be confirmed on Wednesday. Explaining the exclusion of several sitting councillors, Debroy stated that changes were made after thorough deliberation and approval from the party high command in New Delhi, factoring in changes in ward reservations, age criteria, internal assessments, and public connect. He added that all party candidates will file their nomination papers on November 4 and November 5. Responding to a question on the recent attack on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel along the border, Debroy condemned the incident and stated that Chief Minister Manik Saha had taken immediate corrective measures. He informed that 12 to 13 persons have already been arrested in connection with the assault and asserted that the administration will take strict action against everyone linked to smuggling and attacks on security personnel.
